Don McLean – Utrieďte si myšlienky, cez vaše ústa potom vyjdú krásne veci

 don mclean

Na budúci rok to bude už šesťdesiat rokov, čo prvýkrát zaznela pieseň s prostým názvom American Pie. Nádherná melódia, nejednoznačný text a precítená interpretácia v podaní jej autora Dona McLeana.

SWITCH to ENGLISH VERSION

Musicpress:
Šesťdesiate roky ste prežili v hudobných kluboch. V čom je ich dnešná dôležitosť?
Don McLean:

Don McLean:

Dnešnú Ameriku najlepšie opisuje pieseň (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction – utopíme sa v zbytočných informáciách.

Musicpress:

Don McLean:

Nedostáva sa mi takej veľkej pozornosti zo strany médií a som za to vďačný.

Musicpress:
Pesničkárov nahradili raperi, ktorí sa stali glosátormi spoločnosti. Kedy opäť nastane pesničkársky revival?
Don McLean:

Pravdepodobne teraz nebudeme vidieť skvelé skladanie piesní, pretože si to vyžaduje vyššiu umeleckú úroveň.

Musicpress:
Don McLean:

Áno, mohlo by to stať aj dnes.

Musicpress:
Čo je umeleckou a spoločenskou výpoveďou dnešnej mladej generácie hudobníkov?
Don McLean:

Učte sa od skvelých hudobníkov a básnikov. Dajte krásne myšlienky do hlavy a krásne veci potom vyjdú z vašich úst.

Musicpress:
Don McLean:

To, čo robím skutočne milujem, a preto ma nové výzvy stále bavia.

Musicpress:
In the 60´s, music clubs were offer your homes. Where lies their importance today?
Don McLean:

Clubs and other small places are a place to build your act and make mistakes.

Musicpress:
You have written a truly beautiful song Vincent, which has been playing in the Van Gogh´s museum in Amsterdam. What do you think about a new movie „Loving Vincent“ ? Do you think that we have now more understanding for nowadays Vincents?
Don McLean:

I like Loving Vincent but they should have used my version of the song. I don’t like the re-recorded version.

Musicpress:
„American Pie“ truly reflected its decade. How would you describe USA today? What music describes today´s USA the best?
Don McLean:

Today the United States is best described by the song Satisfaction – we are drowning in useless information.

Musicpress:
Do today´s songwriters have as much impact on public opinion as they had in the past? I am talking about W. Guthrie, Bob Dylan and you of course.
Don McLean:

I think there are big time artists out these but they do not really write about important issues and they never disagree with popular opinion.

Musicpress:
Songwriters in the 60´s often played long songs, but today everything seems to be short and simple – people want short-cuts. Nowadays, songs have to be complex, catchy, short and simple – but how does one explains struggles of life in a three-minute song?
Don McLean:

You can explain struggle if you use poetry properly but the lyrics are very weak in these songs. Give Peace a Chance is very short but makes a point.

Musicpress:
What power, or if you want, magic, does a song possess? What does it depend on?
Don McLean:

The wedding of melody and verse must make it unforgettable from the first listen.

Musicpress:
Singers were constantly on tour in the 60´s. Bob Dylan is still on his never-ending tour and you are going to have a 2-year tour as well. Do you like travelling? Do you see some symbolism in that?
Don McLean:

I feel I must play my trade and exercise my mind to be alive. Furthermore I love the adventure.

Musicpress:
Critics and listeners often don´t separate author´s music and his personal life. Don´t you think about ignoring press like Dylan did, saying everything is in your songs?
Don McLean:

I don’t get that much press and I am thankful for that.

Musicpress:
Singers were replaced by rapers, who are now musical critics of our society. Do you think that time for classic singers and songwriters is to come sometime again?
Don McLean:

We might not see great song-writing again since it requires a higher level of art.

Musicpress:
Historical events such as Vietnam war have influenced many songwriters to create an unforgeable protest-songs which resonated within generations, surely influenced many individualities and created new artistic and musical directions. Do you think that some historical events or long term situations made a start to a new directions in music?
Don McLean:

Yes this could happen.

Musicpress:
What is an output, a message of today´s young artists generation?
Don McLean:

Learn from great musicians and poets. Put beautiful things in your head and beautiful things will come out of your mouth.

Musicpress:
What is your motivation to keep going, never cease to be productive and to record new and great songs like you did on your latest album Botanical Gardens?
Don McLean:

I love what I do and I enjoy the challenge.
