UUUU

Ak podrobne sledujete alternatívnu a avantgardnú scénu, mohli ste sa s menami ako Edvard Graham Lewis (Wire, Dome), Matthew Simms (Wire, It Hugs Back), Valentina Magaletti (Tomaga, Vanishing Twin, The Oscillations, Raime) a Thighpaulsandra (Julian Cope, Spiritualized, Coil, Wire), stretnúť na viacerých zásadných albumoch z tejto scény.

swith to english version

Musicpress:

Edvard Graham Lewis:

Všetci štyria členovia máme širokú škálu individuálnych a zvukových chutí a veľkú oblasť spoločného ocenenia. Možno je to, to čo počujete? Spoločný tón, pocit napätia a kontrastu.

Valentina Magaletti:

Kontrast je koncipovaný v dialógu, vo výmene názorov, v hermetickom prístupe. Áno, som toho fanúšik.

Matthew Simms:

Thighpaulsandra:

Mám rád zopár albumov od Emerson, Lake and Palmer.

Musicpress:
Čo je pre vás dôležitejšie? Zvuk, alebo forma a myšlienka?

Edvard Graham Lewis:

Niekedy!

Valentina Magaletti:

Nemôžem viac súhlasiť s pánom Lewisom.

Thighpaulsandra:

Obidve sú rovnako dôležité a vzájomne závislé.

Musicpress:
Váš album celý vznikol ako live / jam session v štúdiu. Vraj ste nechceli dopredu nič plánovať, ale iba spontánne muzicírovať. Dalo vám živé hranie väčšiu voľnosť vo vašom sebavyjadrení?

Edvard Graham Lewis:

Hranie a nahrávanie „live” má pre nás niekoľko praktických výhod: Za prvé sme nikdy predtým spolu nehrali a za druhé sme pred session nikdy žiadny materiál spolu neskomponovali. Tieto dva elementy zaručovali stopercentnú spontánnosť!

Valentina Magaletti:

Myslím si, že sme nevedeli, čo máme očakávať od nahrávania, takže určite bolo sebavyjadrenie nevyhnutnou súčasťou a ingredienciou sonického modis operandi.

Matthew Simms:

Dalo mi to priestor na skúmanie myšlienok preparovanej gitary a hranie na gitaru netradičnými spôsobmi. To sa mi na nahrávaní veľmi páčilo, pretože nie vždy som povzbudený hrať menej muzikálne a viac perkusívne a podobne!

Thighpaulsandra:

Prijímam chaos a spontánnosť.

Thighpaulsandra:

Nikdy som to nebral do úvahy v tom momente.

Musicpress:
Skladby majú určitú retrospektívu, náznaky post punku a krautrocku. Chceli ste prepojiť súčasné a minulé zvuky?

Edvard Graham Lewis:

Matthew Simms:

Myslím, že Graham to už povedal: „nič nebolo vylúčené!“, a mohli sme všetko dobré zahrnúť..

Thighpaulsandra:

Edvard Graham Lewis:

Melanchólia sa mi trochu páči.

Valentina Magaletti:

Smutné a bezútešné so štipkou himalájskej soli je perfektný recept na úspešný dvojalbum v Editions Mego (pozn. redakcie – nezávislý hudobný label so sídlom vo Viedni).

Thighpaulsandra:

Musicpress:
The sound of your project reminds me of something yet stays completely original. Maybe this originality comes from the fact you came from a various musical environments. Do you like contrast?

Edvard Graham Lewis:

All 4 members have wide ranging individual musical/sound tastes and huge areas of common appreciation… Perhaps, this is what you hear? A shared tone, sense of tension and contrast.

Valentina Magaletti:

Contrast conceived as in dialogue, exchange of ideas, hermeneutic approach yes, I am fan.

Matthew Simms:

playing with musicians who do things you enjoy but come from different backgrounds/worlds/styles is most always interesting and a great way to open your ears to new sounds, ideas and ways of working

Thighpaulsandra:

We create an artistic emulsion which can be used liberally.

Musicpress:
Weren’t you afraid of the outcome of your project, because of your complex musical background?

Edvard Graham Lewis:

No! Personally, I thought the opposite, that the shared values would conqueror/unite the complexities!

Valentina Magaletti:

Not afraid. I felt quite intrigued and honored to share studio time with people I hugely respect, artistically.

Matthew Simms:

quite the opposite – it was the combination that made the recording session both happen and happening!

Thighpaulsandra:

Chance is an exciting prospect.

Musicpress:
Are you fan of any big music projects / supergroups?

Edvard Graham Lewis:

Not sure what you mean exactly by (big)? Were Led Zepplin, Traffic, Blind Faith, Cream, Lifetime supergroups? If so, sometimes.

Valentina Magaletti:

I only judge an album by the sum of its parts. It doesn’t really matter if it falls into a „supergroup” or „big music projects” to me. Being an avid Jazz fan, I always embrace sonic promiscuity with freedom and wonder.

Thighpaulsandra:

I have a few Emerson, Lake and Palmer albums.

Musicpress:
What is more important for you? The sound or the form and idea?

Edvard Graham Lewis:

I think all are important but ultimately the sound is the result of the form shaping the idea? Sometimes!

Valentina Magaletti:

I couldn’t agree more with Mr. Lewis.

Thighpaulsandra:

Both are equally important and co-dependent.

Musicpress:
Your album was recorded live, as a jam session in the studio. The story goes, you wanted a pure spontaneous experience. Do you think that playing live gave you more freedom in your self-expression?

Edvard Graham Lewis:

Playing and recording „live“ had several practical advantages 1. The 4 of us had never played together 2. We had not written any material before the sessions. These almost guaranteed spontaneity!

Valentina Magaletti:

I guess we didn’t know what to expect from the recording so self expression was definitely an essential ingredient of the sonic modus operandi.

Matthew Simms:

it gave me space to explore ideas of prepared guitar and playing the guitar in non-traditional ways which is something I really enjoyed about the recording – I’m not always encouraged to play less musical and more percussive etc!

Thighpaulsandra:

I embrace chaos and spontaneity.  I’m sure we could have planned and composed an album that would have been equally interesting but live recording seemed the most exciting path for this first album.

Musicpress:
Did you want a strictly instrumental album from the start?

Edvard Graham Lewis:

No. Always thought vocals/ spoken word were a possibility, nothing was ruled out.

Valentina Magaletti:

I love the singing parts on it and I hope to have more sung tunes in future UUUU efforts.

Thighpaulsandra:

There are three singers in the group.  Someone had to open their mouth eventually.

Musicpress:
Did you think from the start, that this is a project you want to go on a stage with?

Edvard Graham Lewis:

The recording of an album was the priority…when we heard the results of the editing and mixing, then an enthusiasm to try and conjure something of it’s essence live became an exciting possibility.

Valentina Magaletti:

When we recorded the album I merely focused on that. Didn’t think about anything else.

Matthew Simms:

I wasn’t even sure we’d make a record let alone play shows! The idea of the 4 of us getting together to see what happened was all there was…

Thighpaulsandra:

I never considered it for a moment.  I think the live shows are a totally different beast.

Musicpress:
We hear some retrospect in your songs, a signs of post punk and krautrock. Did you intent to include sounds of the past and the present?

Edvard Graham Lewis:

Having DJed in the early 70s and started to perform in the mid 70s, elements from both eras have an influence on my work.

Valentina Magaletti:

All these influences are definitely but happy to admit that, there just a fraction of what I listen every day.

Matthew Simms:

I think Graham said already, „nothing was ruled out!” and therefore everything good can be included!

Thighpaulsandra:

Hopefully we have included sounds of the past, present and future.

Musicpress:
Your compositions are truly beautiful, but often sound sad and bleak. Do you often feel melancholic yourself?

Edvard Graham Lewis:

I do like a bit of melancholy

Valentina Magaletti:

Sad and bleak with a pinch of Himalayan salt is the perfect recipe for a successful double album out on Editions Mego.

Thighpaulsandra:

Sadness is a very popular veneer, so I am told.
