Sopranistka Ana-Carmen Balestra patrí k výrazným talentom mladej opernej scény. Na festivale Viva Musica! vystúpi v záhrade Domu Albrechtovcov s komorným triom, ktoré prepája hudbu Južnej Ameriky, Francúzska a Španielska. V rozhovore hovorí o hľadaní vlastného umeleckého hlasu mimo opery aj o tom, prečo verí, že hudba dokáže spájať ľudí bez ohľadu na hranice.
Váš program na festivale Viva Musica! spája hudbu Južnej Ameriky, Francúzska a Španielska. Hoci ide o veľmi odlišné hudobné tradície, akú emocionálnu alebo hudobnú niť podľa vás spája tento program?
Tento program spája láska vo všetkých jej podobách a odtieňoch. Každá skladba zachytáva inú stránku lásky, no všetky v sebe nesú rovnakú vášeň a emocionálnu intenzitu. Práve táto intenzita je podľa mňa niťou, ktorá prepája celý program.
Zároveň si myslím, že hudobné štýly by nemali zostať oddelené. Prepájanie klasickej hudby s ľudovou piesňou napríklad odráža niečo, na čom mi veľmi záleží – že spoločnosť ani krása nikdy nie sú len jednou vecou. Chcela som, aby tento program ukázal čo najviac rôznych podôb tejto rozmanitosti.
Pravidelne vystupujete na významných operných scénach, no tento projekt je postavený na intímnom obsadení tria s violončelom a gitarou. Umožňuje vám takéto komorné zoskupenie odhaliť inú stránku vašej osobnosti, než akú ukazujete v opere?
Operu milujem. Veľmi ma baví zakaždým vstúpiť do kože inej postavy. Spolupráca s týmito úžasnými hudobníkmi však vo mne objavila úplne inú stránku.
V tomto triu môžem nájsť svoj vlastný umelecký hlas, experimentovať s hudbou, na ktorej som vyrastala, a formovať všetko podľa vlastných predstáv. Zároveň ide o celkom iný spôsob spevu, ktorý ma veľmi napĺňa a ktorý by som chcela ďalej rozvíjať.
Vaše zoskupenie spája spev, violončelo a klasickú gitaru, čo je na recitál pomerne nezvyčajná kombinácia. Vznikol najprv tento nástrojový koncept, alebo bol impulzom samotný repertoár?
Sme blízki priatelia a už dlho sme túžili spolu hrať. Vitor je skvelý aranžér a spolu so svojím blízkym priateľom pripravil aranžmány napísané priamo pre toto trio.
Táto kombinácia nástrojov mi pripadá výnimočná, pretože prináša nové zvukové farby, ktoré na recitáloch bežne nepočuť. Všetci traja sme zanietení hudobníci a máme radi podobný druh hudby, takže sa navzájom tvorivo posúvame. Každý z nás priniesol vlastné nápady na repertoár a spoločne z nich vznikol tento program.
Toto leto vystúpite ako EFFEA Artist v Bratislave aj v Maďarsku. Prispôsobujete svoj prístup publiku v jednotlivých krajinách, alebo veríte, že hudba hovorí všade rovnakým jazykom?
Pevne veríme, že hudba je univerzálny jazyk, ktorý dokáže osloviť každého. Preto sme pripravili program, ktorý je prístupný širokému publiku – spája klasický repertoár so swingujúcou latinskoamerickou hudbou, takže si v ňom každý môže nájsť niečo blízke.
Na tieto koncerty sa nesmierne tešíme, pretože v oboch krajinách pôjde o náš debut. Keď som bola dieťa, cestovala som do Maďarska na spevácku súťaž v Nyíregyháze s detským zborom a už vtedy som si uvedomila, že hudba spája ľudí bez ohľadu na to, komu spievate. Veľmi sa teším, že sme boli vybraní do programu EFFEA, a dúfam, že naše trio bude môcť vystupovať medzinárodne čoraz častejšie, pretože sprístupňovať hudbu čo najširšiemu publiku je pre nás veľmi dôležité.
Vaša kariéra sa v poslednom období rozvíja mimoriadne rýchlo – od National Opera Studio a programu Dutch Classical Talent až po medzinárodné turné. Bol počas uplynulého roka okamih, keď ste si uvedomili, že vaša umelecká cesta vstúpila do novej etapy?
To je krásna otázka. Áno, taký okamih naozaj prišiel.
Uplynulý rok bol pre mňa nesmierne inšpiratívny a cítim sa veľmi šťastná, že môžem byť taká pracovne vyťažená práve v oblasti, ktorú milujem. Niekedy sa mi až nechce veriť, aké mám šťastie, že sa môžem venovať opere, rozprávať prostredníctvom nej rôzne príbehy a zároveň vytvárať vlastné programy z hudby, ktorá je mi veľmi blízka.
Jedným z najsilnejších zážitkov bolo to, že som tento rok vystúpila naživo v hlavnom vysielacom čase holandskej televízie. O niečom takom sa mi nikdy ani nesnívalo. Dodnes si občas musím pripomenúť, že sa to naozaj stalo.
Byť hudobníčkou je nádherné – stretávate ľudí z najrozličnejších prostredí a neustále vytvárate niečo nové a rozvíjate svoju vlastnú tvorbu. Dúfam, že ma čaká ešte veľa podobných rokov plných koncertných turné, tvorivých stretnutí a hudobných spojení s ľuďmi po celom svete.
Your programme at the Viva Musica! Festival brings together music from South America, France and Spain. Although these traditions are very different, what emotional or musical thread do you feel connects them?
What connects this programme is love, in all its different shapes and colours. Every piece speaks to a different facet of it, but they all share the same passion and the same emotional intensity underneath. That shared intensity is really the thread that ties the whole programme together.
I also feel strongly that styles don’t need to stay separate. Mixing classical music with folk song, for instance, reflects something I care about deeply: that society, and beauty, is never just one thing. I want this programme to show many different flavours of that richness.
You regularly perform on major opera stages, yet this project is built around the intimacy of a trio with cello and guitar. Does such a setting allow you to reveal a different side of your artistry than opera does?
I love opera, stepping into a different character each time is something I truly enjoy. But working with these wonderful musicians brings out a completely different side of me. In this trio, I get to find my own artistic voice, experiment with the music I grew up with, and shape everything entirely on my own terms. It’s also a different way of singing altogether, one that I love and want to keep developing.
Your ensemble combines voice, cello and classical guitar – an unusual instrumentation for a recital. Did this line-up shape the repertoire, or did the repertoire inspire the creation of the ensemble?
The three of us are close friends and had wanted to play together for a long time. Vitor is a wonderful arranger, and together with a close friend of his, he created arrangements especially written for this trio. I find this combination of instruments truly special, it opens up new colours you don’t often hear in a recital setting. Because we’re all quite passionate musicians who love the same kind of music, we can really push each other creatively. Each of us brought different ideas for the repertoire, and together that became this programme.
This summer you will perform in both Bratislava and Hungary as an EFFEA Artist. Do you approach audiences in different countries differently, or do you believe that music speaks the same language everywhere?
We strongly believe music is a truly universal language that connects with everyone. That’s why we built a programme that feels approachable for any audience, a mix of classical repertoire and swinging Latin American music, so there’s something in it for everyone.
We’re incredibly excited for these performances, as this will be our debut in both countries. As a child, I once travelled to Hungary to sing in a competition in Nyiregyhaza with my children’s choir, and even then I discovered that music connects people no matter who you’re singing for. Being chosen for this makes me very excited, and I hope our trio gets to perform internationally more and more, because making music accessible to everyone is something we truly care about.
Your recent career has moved remarkably quickly – from the National Opera Studio and Dutch Classical Talent to international touring. Has there been a moment over the past year when you realised that your artistic life had truly entered a new chapter?
What a lovely question. Yes, actually, there has been. This past year has been truly inspiring, and I feel incredibly lucky to be this busy doing work I love. I can hardly believe how fortunate I am to work in this field, telling different stories through opera while also creating my own programmes around music that means a lot to me.
One moment that really stayed with me was performing live on Dutch prime-time television this year, something I never even dared to dream of. I still have to pinch myself. Being a musician is a wonderful thing: you meet people from so many different backgrounds, and you’re constantly creating and developing your own work. I hope for many more beautiful years like this one, full of tours, creative moments, and connecting with people all over the world.
