Daddy Ad z Trojan Sound System – Trendy prichádzajú a odchádzajú, dobrá hudba však zostáva

Rozvibrovali celú Pohodu. Nasadili atmosféru pokoja a priateľstva.

Musicpress:
Kedy a ako došlo k prepojeniu vydavateľskej činnosti Trojan Label a Trojan Sound System?

Daddy Ad / Trojan Sound System:

Začali sme na začiatku roka 2000. Rozbehol som sound system s mojím „basovým bratom“ (pozn. redakcie – brother in bass) Earlom Gatesheadom, ktorý sme nazvali Roots and Reality.

Musicpress:

Daddy Ad / Trojan Sound System:

Musicpress:

Daddy Ad / Trojan Sound System:

Moja žena je Colleen „Cosmo“ Murphy, ochrankyňa Davida Mancusa (The Loft) už 25 rokov.

Musicpress:

Daddy Ad / Trojan Sound System:

Nie toľko, ako by som chcel! Všetci moji speváci pochádzajú z jamajských rodín, takže každý rok tam trávia veľa času. Jamajská kultúra veľa ovplyvnila a prenikla do západnej kultúry a spoločnosti po celom svete – od spôsobu, akým sa ľudia obliekajú, čo hovoria, čo jedia až po hudbu, ktorú všetci počúvajú každý deň. Je to srdcový tep v našom svete, nech ideme kamkoľvek.

Musicpress:

Daddy Ad / Trojan Sound System:

Daddy Ad / Trojan Sound System:

Trendy prichádzajú a odchádzajú.

Daddy Ad / Trojan Sound System:

Je to globálny problém. Politici sú rozvratní a naučili sa ako deliť a ovplyvňovať spoločnosť tajnými prostriedkami a cez sociálne médiá, polarizujú skupiny ľudí a bez toho, aby si to mnohí uvedomili, ich ovládajú. Všetci sa musíme pozrieť do našich sŕdc a zjednotiť sa proti politikom a ich trikom.

Musicpress:
Skúste nám stručne charakterizovať prínos vašich MC – Supa4 Creation, Chucky Bantan a Jah Buck.

Daddy Ad / Trojan Sound System:

Musicpress:
Zaujímavosťou z histórie sú aj tzv. špeciále, ktoré pripravovali rôzne sound systémy, aby mali výhodu nad konkurenciou. Aké máte pripravené na Pohodu?

Daddy Ad / Trojan Sound System:

Tak to vám nemôžem povedať (smiech). Bude veľa raritných verzií a strihov, ktoré zahráme. Dávam prednosť tomu, aby som mohol so sebou priniesť svojich vlastných spevákov, než aby som ich len pustil z nahrávky, v ktorej vykrikujú do sound systému, aby dostali zaplatené tantiémy za prehraté vokály. Je to síce zábavné, ale oveľa radšej preferujeme živé hranie než len hranie jinglov cez piesne.

Musicpress:

Daddy Ad / Trojan Sound System:

Na začiatku sound systém predával alkohol, aby pomohol zarobiť peniaze a zaplatiť náklady spojené so svojou prevádzkou. Oveľa radšej by som vykreslil spojenie s bylinkami než s alkoholom v rámci tejto kultúry.

Musicpress:
When and how did the collaboration between Trojan Label a Trojan Sound System started?

Daddy Ad / Trojan Sound System:

It started in the early 2000s. I (DaddyAd) was running a sound system with my brother in bass, Earl Gateshead, called Roots and Reality. We were on a mission to break reggae back into contemporary music venues and festivals and were putting together line ups that helped young people understand where their music and culture came from. I’m a strong believer that many forms of contemporary ‘dance’ music might not exist without the influence of reggae. We were the first sound system to do this, playing with artists from the Drum and Bass, Jungle and Dubstep worlds, Hip Hop and even Disco, House and Techno. Without Jammy, Tubby, Perry, Scientist and many more reggae producers, would these genres have developed the way they did? Trojan Records saw what we were doing and us wanting to bring reggae to new fans and asked if I’d stop Roots and Reality and instead reform the Trojan Sound System in 2004. The rest, as they say, is history…

Musicpress:
Music can be played on different medias but you prefer vinyl. What do you like about this format and how do you collect vinyl?

Daddy Ad / Trojan Sound System:

I personally love and prefer the sound of vinyl when the system and turntables are set up correctly with hi-fi (not ‘DJ’) cartridges. Playing with vinyl is a challenge as the vibration from a stage can often interfere with the sound, which is why I use lots of concrete slabs and other forms of isolation to protect the turntables and cartridge from interference. When they’re not set up correctly, it can sound terrible! There are also so many recordings that aren’t available in high resolution digital formats. You need a good dealer though to help you navigate your way into the ‘collectors’ records and it’s a fine line of taste in selecting records which are fantastic, rather than just rare… The online world has change this though as you can find a version of any record available through the right sites and collectors.

Musicpress:
What is your opinion on a new generation of DJs and electronics (parties…)?

Daddy Ad / Trojan Sound System:

New generations of DJs are essential for our culture to grow so it’s something I massively support. Re electronics and sound systems, I have been pushing for audiophile quality sound throughout my career. My wife is Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy, the protégé of David Mancuso (The Loft) for 25 years and both Colleen and David taught me about sound as well as how to tell a story through music. This history and legacy is something for all new DJs and parties to look back to and learn from, it’s the birthplace and source.

Musicpress:
Your life opinion, philosophy and production is closely connected with Jamaica culture. Do you often visit Jamaica?

Daddy Ad / Trojan Sound System:

Not as much as I would like! My vocalists are all from JA families so spend a lot of time there each year. JA culture has influenced and permeated so much of Western culture and society throughout the world, from the way people dress, speak, what they eat and throughout so much music we all listen to everyday. It’s a heartbeat within our world wherever we go.

Musicpress:
Is the current Jamaican culture able to surprise or is it more about searching in the past?

Daddy Ad / Trojan Sound System:

There is a strong contemporary roots scene in JA, but much of the music that is exported is incredibly negative and compromised. I’d say two or three new records out of 50 are worth listening to. Maybe one worth playing out! I think all music should move forward and not try to recreate what has been done in the past, but some of the best recorded music is from the past from a time when the culture was thriving and to understand the present and future, you’ve got to understand the past.

Musicpress:
Few years ago we witnessed a big boom of ska, OI! and street punk which is currently on decline. What could help this scene to be more alive again?

Daddy Ad / Trojan Sound System:

Trends come and go and come back again. There are always and will always be young people discovering new things from the past that they connect with and embrace as their own. These cultures are often regurgitated, become a ‘trend’ again, get overplayed and sold out and disappear again. The fashion loop cycle continues!

Musicpress:
It seems that extremist opinions are penetrating subcultures. Do you have this problem also in Great Britain?

Daddy Ad / Trojan Sound System:

It’s a global problem. Politicians are divisive and have learnt how to segment and influence society through clandestine means and through social media, polarizing groups of people and without many realising, they are controlling them. We all need to look into our hearts and hold each other’s hands unified against politricks.

Musicpress:
For your performances are typical connections with MC that has a tradition in dancing evenings where you fill the time when the LPs we exchanged with talks and songs. Could you briefly characterize contribution of your MC – Supa4 Creation, Chucky Bantan and Jah Buck.

Daddy Ad / Trojan Sound System:

My vocalists are some of the best sound system vocalists anywhere in the world. For Pohoda I’m bringing Chucky Bantan with him. We call him our ‘songbird’ and he has a beautiful, gospel infused soul voice as well as a powerful sing-jay style delivery for dancehall. We believe in unity, positivity and love and have stories to share. He just won Best Male Artist and Best Male Album at the recent UK Reggae awards, so I’m really looking forward to us both performing at Pohoda for the first time.

Musicpress:
Interesting thing from the history are also so called specials that were prepared by various sound systems to get advantage over competition. What specials will you have at Pohoda?

Daddy Ad / Trojan Sound System:

That would be telling (smile). There will be lots of rare cuts and versions I’ll be playing. I prefer bringing my own vocalists with me rather than just playing records where the artist gives a shout out to the sound system they were paid to re-record the vocals for though. It’s fun, but we prefer to play and live in the moment with the people rather than playing jingles over songs.

Musicpress:
In the beginning the sound systems supported clubs that sold alcohol – rum. Is the connection with alcohol companies present also today?

Daddy Ad / Trojan Sound System:

In the beginning the sound system would sell alcohol to help make money and pay for the costs involved in operating a sound system. Rum and beer being two popular and affordable drinks in JA. Today, rum companies and brands want to associate themselves with this history and stereotypical link with sugar cane and rum production in JA. I’d more readily draw the connection with herb than alcohol within the culture though!
